Out Of Many, One - A Feast of Resistance
It started with a conversation on soy sauce, and how this ingredient made its way almost ubiquitously across Jerk recipes despite Jerk predating Chinese immigration to Jamaica. I came to meet Ryan through our friend Justin, and collectively we began discussing and exploring identity, culture, and cultural exchange. Ryan, Justin, and I are Jamaican, Korean, and Chinese, respectively, so in being inspired by our cultures and these conversations, we decided to host a dinner event together, in true MSG fashion.
On October 16th, MSG presents Out of Many, One: A Feast of Resistance. We are serving a four course menu, exploring cultural exchange and integration as it is seen and celebrated in Jamaica compared to how these concepts materialize within the US. Interestingly, the United States shares a similar motto, “E Pluribus Unum” (“Out of Many, One”), to that of Jamaica’s Coat of Arms, “Out of Many, One People”, yet this sentiment isn’t reflected in our society to the extent Jamaicans uphold their national coat of arms. We hope to examine this through our food, presenting these questions and concepts for you all to have an open conversation about over the dinner table.
Join us won’t you, for a feast you won’t forget.
Dining times are limited to 1.5 hour blocks. We are currently unable to accommodate dietary restrictions. This event will comply with current NYC COVID Restrictions and will require proof of vaccination and valid ID.
